Brilliant Colour: A. Y. Jackson and Vivid Colour

T Pre-registration is required.he Impressionists were known for their use of vivid colour, as a reaction to the careful academic art that had been the norm until then. A. Y. Jackson was trained in the academic style, then went to France to learn about newer styles and techniques. The Impressionist influence is clearly seen in his work, yet it's not immediately obvious how he got the effects that he did.

In this class, JoAnn Turner will look at how A.Y. Jackson got the vivid clear colour effects he did. We'll cover basic colour theory and talk about how the Impressionists used colour to capture "the vibration of light.". We'll talk mainly about painting, but the principles of colour will work in many different media. There'll be some art history, some colour theory, probably a few laughs, and lots of time playing with colour.

What's Included: Each student will receive a kit of acrylic paints, some brushes, paper and a palette, as well as a handout. You're also welcome to bring other art materials: your own acrylic paints, pencil crayons, pastels or markers, so you can see how things work with your preferred materials. Class is limited to 6 students. Class fee is $25. The Oliver Community Arts Council is generously helping to fund these workshops and exhibit.

Class Time and Date: Tuesday, August 17, 10 am to 2 pm at the Quail's Nest Arts Centre, 5840 Airport Street, Oliver, BC. There will be a breaks. There is a fridge on site to keep your food and drink cold.

The Instructor: JoAnn Turner has a Diploma in Fine Arts from Kootenay School of Art, Nelson, BC, and a BA in Art History from the University of Victoria. She's lived in Oliver since 1992. She's worked in many media, from drawing and painting to jewellery, pottery, theatrical set design and costume. She's a founding member of the Ripoff Artists, mainly painting in acrylics on many different surfaces: wooden furniture, paper, 3-D shadow boxes, even ceramic cow skulls!
